Brand systems: beyond the logo
Visual identity architecture, design tokens & brand governance
A logo is a mark. A brand system is the complete visual language — every decision about color, type, spacing, imagery, iconography, tone, and motion that governs how an organization appears in the world. The components: logo system (primary, secondary, favicon), color palette (primary, secondary, semantic, neutral), typography system (display, body, mono, size scale), spacing system (base unit, scale), component library, imagery style guide, and voice/tone guidelines. Without all of these, every piece of new design starts from scratch.
Key Points
- ▸Logos are 10% of a brand system
- ▸Design tokens are the implementation layer — connect design to code
- ▸A brand system without governance decays within 6 months
- ▸System > rules > individual creativity
