Layout grids & white space: the invisible structure
Grid systems, spatial hierarchy & the design decisions behind compositions that breathe
The 8-point grid is the industry standard for UI design because 8 divides cleanly into common screen widths and aligns with standard icon sizes (16, 24, 32, 48, 64px). Every spacing decision — padding, margins, gap between elements — is a multiple of 8. This creates visual rhythm and consistency without having to think about every individual spacing decision. Some systems use a 4-point base (more granular) or a 12-column grid overlay for macro layout decisions.
Key Points
- ▸8pt base: all spacing is a multiple of 8
- ▸4pt for fine details, 8pt for components, 24-48pt for sections
- ▸White space is not empty — it's active contrast
- ▸Consistent spacing creates perceived quality
