Russian — Basic
Russian — Basic Level
Russian is spoken by approximately 170 million native speakers and is an official language of Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan. It is one of the six official UN languages. Its grammar is complex — six cases, three genders, aspect-based verbs — but its phonology is regular once stress patterns are learned.
The Cyrillic Alphabet: First Priority
Learn Cyrillic before anything else. It can be mastered to reading speed in 1-2 weeks:
Familiar letters: А а (a), Е е (ye), К к (k), М м (m), О о (o), Т т (t)
Deceptive fakes: В в = V, Н н = N, Р р = R, С с = S, У у = U, Х х = KH (loch-sound)
New characters: Б б (b), Г г (g), Д д (d), Ж ж (zh — as in measure), З з (z), И и (ee), Й й (short y), Л л (l), П п (p), Ф ф (f), Ц ц (ts), Ч ч (ch), Ш ш (sh), Щ щ (shch), Ъ ъ (hard sign — separates), Ы ы (hard ı sound), Ь ь (soft sign — palatalises preceding consonant), Э э (e), Ю ю (yu), Я я (ya)
Pronunciation Key Points
Stress: determines vowel quality. Must be memorised word by word — not marked in standard text.
Soft consonants: the soft sign (Ь) makes the preceding consonant palatalised — pronounced with the tongue touching the roof of the mouth. "Мать" (mat' — mother) vs. "мат" (mat — mat) — entirely different words.
Rolled R: Russian р is trilled, similar to Spanish rr.
Essential Phrases
Daily: Здравствуйте Zdravstvuyte (formal hello), Как дела? Kak dela? (How are things? — informal), Хорошо, спасибо Khorosho, spasibo (Fine, thanks), Я не понимаю Ya ne ponimayu (I don't understand), Повторите, пожалуйста Povtorite, pozhaluysta (Please repeat)
Navigation: Где находится…? Gde nakhoditsya…? (Where is…?), туалет tualet (toilet), Сколько стоит? Skol'ko stoit? (How much does it cost?)
Verbs: Aspect is Everything
Russian verbs come in pairs: imperfective (ongoing, habitual) and perfective (completed, one-time). "Читать/прочитать" (to read/to have read). This aspect distinction replaces much of what English expresses through tense. "Я читал книгу" (I was reading a book) vs. "Я прочитал книгу" (I read/finished the book).
