Funnel Design & Conversion Rate Optimisation
Traffic is expensive. Whether paid, organic, or referral, every visitor represents a cost — in media spend, content investment, or time. CRO is the discipline of extracting more value from the traffic you already have. A 2% improvement in conversion rate on $500k annual traffic can be worth more than doubling the traffic budget.
The Funnel Audit Before the A/B Test
Most brands jump to A/B testing before completing a funnel audit. The audit identifies where visitors are leaving and why — the A/B test validates the hypothesis for fixing it. Running tests without an audit is guessing at scale.
Step 1 — Quantitative analysis: Use analytics (GA4, Mixpanel) to map the drop-off at each stage. Where are you losing the most volume? That is your first optimization priority — not the step with the worst rate, but the step with the highest volume loss.
Step 2 — Qualitative analysis: Session recordings (Hotjar, Microsoft Clarity) show you what users actually do on the page. Heatmaps show what they click, scroll maps show how far they read. The combination of quant and qual data produces hypotheses you can be confident in.
Step 3 — User testing: 5-8 target users completing a specific task on the funnel surface more usability issues than any amount of analytics. Watch what confuses them. Do not explain the page — observe.
The Five Conversion Levers
Every conversion is determined by five factors, each of which can be optimized:
1. Clarity: Does the visitor immediately understand what you offer, who it's for, and what happens when they take the action? If they have to think, you've lost.
2. Relevance: Does the page match the ad, email, or link that brought them here? Message mismatch between traffic source and landing page is one of the highest-volume conversion killers.
3. Value: Is the offer compelling enough to justify the action? More value can be added through better framing, bonuses, or removing risk — not just discounting.
4. Friction: How many steps, form fields, or decisions stand between intent and conversion? Every unnecessary field costs conversions. Every required account creation before purchase costs conversions.
5. Distraction: How many competing CTAs, navigation links, and off-topic content elements are competing for the visitor's attention? Landing pages that kill navigation outperform those that keep it.
A/B Testing Principles
Testing without discipline produces false learnings that send optimization in the wrong direction.
- Test one variable at a time (unless you have the traffic for multivariate testing)
- Run tests to statistical significance (95%+ confidence) before calling a winner
- Run each test for at least one full week to account for day-of-week traffic variation
- Test ideas with the highest potential impact first — headline and hero image changes move conversion more than button color
- Document all test results, including losers — patterns from losing tests are often more valuable than winning tests
The CRO Priority Stack
When deciding what to test first, prioritize by traffic × impact × confidence:
- Highest priority: Pages with high traffic and known user confusion (session recordings show it)
- Medium priority: Pages with high traffic and no obvious confusion but below-benchmark CVR
- Low priority: Pages with low traffic regardless of CVR — statistical significance will take too long to reach
Mobile CVR: The Forgotten Gap
The average e-commerce site converts at 1.5-2× higher on desktop than mobile, despite mobile traffic now being majority for most brands. This gap represents enormous revenue left on the table.
Mobile-specific optimizations:
- Reduce form fields to the absolute minimum (autofill, social login)
- Ensure CTAs are thumb-reachable on standard phone sizes
- Optimize page load for 3G — mobile users on slower networks abandon faster
- Test checkout flows specifically on mobile — what works on desktop is often broken on mobile
CRO is a system, not a project. The brands that build durable conversion advantages are the ones that have a continuous testing cadence — not the ones that ran a test in Q1 and called it done.
